Enhanced Access

Enhanced Access, as part of the NHS Primary Care Network (PCN) Directed Enhanced Service (DES), aims to improve patient access to primary care by extending service hours and offering a broader range of appointment options. This initiative seeks to accommodate patients' diverse needs and schedules, ensuring more timely and convenient access to healthcare services.

We have worked with PCNs to both implement and enhance their Enhanced Access service, supporting with:

  • Strategic Planning: Assisting in the development of tailored Enhanced Access plans that meet DES requirements and address local patient needs.

  • Workforce Coordination: Facilitating the recruitment and integration of multidisciplinary teams to deliver a wide range of services during extended hours.

  • Operational Support: Providing guidance on logistics, including appointment scheduling, IT interoperability, standard operating procedures and patient communication strategies.

  • Patient Engagement: Helping to design and implement effective patient engagement initiatives to ensure services are responsive to community preferences.

Digital Access Hub

The General Medical Services (GMS) contract and the Primary Care Network (PCN) Directed Enhanced Service (DES) outline specific requirements and present opportunities for GP practices regarding online consultations.

Requirements:

  • Enhanced Patient Access: Implementing online consultations allows patients to contact their GP practice at their convenience, potentially reducing the need for in-person visits and improving access to care.

  • Improved Efficiency: Online consultations can streamline administrative processes, enabling practices to triage and manage patient requests more effectively.

  • Alignment with PCN Objectives: For PCNs, offering online consultations supports the delivery of extended access services and aligns with the broader goals of improving patient care and accessibility.

  • Financial Incentives: Participation in the PCN DES and meeting the online consultation requirements may provide access to additional funding and resources aimed at enhancing primary care services.

We have worked with PCNs to transform their online consultation offer, supporting with:

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborating with PCN members to develop tailored online consultation strategies that meet contractual obligations and address specific patient needs.

  • Service Design and Implementation: Working alongside PCNs to design services and pathways into it.

  • Technology Integration: Assisting in the selection and implementation of suitable online consultation platforms that integrate seamlessly with existing systems.

  • Staff Training: Providing comprehensive training for healthcare professionals to effectively utilise online consultation tools, ensuring a smooth transition and optimal use.

  • Patient Engagement: Developing communication strategies to promote online consultation services to patients, enhancing uptake and satisfaction.
